Many falls at home happen during everyday moments: getting out of bed at night, stepping out of the shower, or carrying something down the stairs. A few small changes can make those moments much safer.
Walk through your loved one’s home with this room-by-room checklist. Most fixes are quick and inexpensive.
Throughout the home
- Clear walkways of clutter, cords and loose rugs
- Bright lighting in every room, with switches near doorways
- Night lights between the bedroom and the bathroom
- Sturdy handrails on both sides of the stairs
- Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Bathroom
- Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower or tub
- Non-slip mats inside and outside the shower
- A shower chair and a handheld shower head
- A raised toilet seat if sitting down is hard
Kitchen and bedroom
- Everyday items stored between waist and shoulder height
- No need to climb on chairs or step stools
- A lamp or light switch within reach of the bed
- A phone within reach of the bed
- A bed and chairs at a height that is easy to get up from
“The safest home is one that still feels like theirs.”
